Unix 2038: a number runs out of room

There is no belief system involved in a signed integer reaching its limit. The last positive 32-bit value is 2,147,483,647. Counting those seconds from the Unix epoch reaches 19 January 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC. The next second is the boundary this ledger records.

Some systems use wider representations and are not exposed to this particular overflow. Others can retain narrow fields in files, protocols or older components even if the surrounding machine is newer. Testing the actual representation matters more than announcing that “computers will fail”.

The useful comparison is Y2K: a date-format issue can be real and still be fixed before widespread harm. A successful fix would not make the original arithmetic imaginary.
