How this ledger works

Doomsday Counter is an editorial selection of predictions, risk stories and real events. It is edited for this independent site; it is not an official NASA, Bulletin or research-project tracker. Contact the editor at doomsday@tootekriitika.ee.

What belongs here

A dated claim needs a named claimant or a clearly identified claim tradition, the original wording or an attributable account, a supported date or horizon, and a reason for inclusion. A scientific event, a capability forecast and a religious interpretation receive different labels. Historical context can remain visible while attribution is being reviewed.

What the counter counts

The hero counts published entries in the failed-claim section whose editorial status is “did not occur as predicted”. Its day total runs from the end of the latest checked closed window in this ledger. It is not a count of every prediction ever made.

The current six closed date entries include two linked Camping dates. A date count is therefore not an author count. Y2K, DART, discovery dates, astronomical events and unverified attributions do not enter the failure counter. A passed AI date requests assessment; it does not automatically become a failed prophecy.

Date precision stays attached

Exact UTC time is reserved for a supported exact deadline, such as the signed 32-bit Unix boundary. Day-level events do not acquire invented seconds. A year stays a year; a range stays a range; “not before” stays a lower bound. Loose or absent timing receives no exact countdown. Billion-year models are shown as approximate horizons.

Sources, probabilities and updates

Sources appear beside entries and on their detail pages. Primary material is preferred. A contemporary report can support a historical claim if its attribution is clear. A rebuttal is not automatically evidence of who said every version of a rumour. Missing sources are acknowledged rather than filled with confident prose.

A probability travels with its event, period, conditions and publication date. Bennu’s probability for one encounter cannot be substituted for a cumulative period. Different AGI definitions cannot be averaged into one meaningful “arrival date”. A single outcome also cannot establish a probability forecaster’s calibration.

Version histories retain the original and revised claims. The “What changed?” feed distinguishes the source’s publication date from the date this site incorporated a correction. Evidence was reviewed on 6 October 2026; that date is not a promise of continuous monitoring.

The lifetime comparison

Your birth year plus the selected age defines a reading horizon. It does not predict your lifespan. Results retain year or range labels and can show partial overlaps. A lower bound might extend beyond the chosen horizon. Undated risks cannot be assigned an age and remain in the separate risk explanation. The calculator runs in your browser and does not submit the birth year to this site.

Humour and human consequences

The ledger can make fun of a confident date. It should not make victims into a punchline or assign one prediction to an entire religion or culture. Human consequences need careful sourcing and a tone suited to the event.

Send a correction or a new entry

Email doomsday@tootekriitika.ee with the entry link, original claim, author, publication date and source or archive URL. Explain what should change and why. Suggestions are reviewed before publication; emailing does not publish your message automatically.

If a source is missing, a record may be moved out of the counter or held for review. The purpose is to give the reader a way to inspect the evidence, not to preserve the largest possible tally.
