The Sun: a red-giant model, not tomorrow’s forecast
The earlier number was missing its model. The 2008 paper supplies one: a calculation of solar evolution, mass loss and orbital effects that finds Earth cannot escape engulfment at the red-giant tip.
The question “will Earth still exist?” is different from “will Earth still support familiar life?”. The ledger keeps those endpoints separate and rounds the timescale accordingly.
