DART: a test that changed an asteroid’s orbit
DART changes the mood of a doomsday ledger: intervention can be something people do, rather than something a clock waits for. The mission deliberately tested whether an impact could alter a small asteroid’s motion.
The target, Dimorphos in the Didymos system, was not on a collision course with Earth. That qualifier belongs beside the success story. NASA’s later analysis refined the orbit change and described changes to the object’s shape.
A successful demonstration is evidence for a method under its tested conditions. It does not mean every asteroid threat is solved, and it should not be sold as the day humanity escaped a scheduled extinction. It is a reason to discuss detection, warning time and tested interventions.
